Jeanine Hourani was twenty before she told anyone how she came to be an Australian. It was then she realised the power of her story.
Fed up with having the conversation about refugees twisted by politicians and the media, Jeanine created In My Own Words. The first-of-its-kind program supports young creatives to shape their story of seeking refuge in Australia and have it heard - whether it's through art, poetry, public speaking, or writing.
Join us for a night of creative storytelling which puts a human voice & experience to the national conversation about refugees. You’ll meet our young storytellers & hear a performance from special guest Black Orchid Stringband.
Black Orchid Stringband was formed by West Papuan freedom fighters now living in Melbourne. The band features traditional bass, ukelele, tifa and beautiful three part vocal harmonies.
Catered by Mabu Mabu. Drinks for sale at the venue.
Money raised from ticket sales will be donated to Road to Refuge.
